The Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, is huge. Every 12 years, thousands of people arrive here to celebrate the Mahamaham festival, known as the Kumbamela of South India. Here’s how it looks when this festival is held. About 50 people died here in a stampede 15 years ago. This tank is beautiful and takes you to another era when there’s no holy shmoly going on.
